About Primary
Primary is an artist-led contemporary visual arts organisation based in Nottingham. Primary supports artistic research, provide studios and residencies to artists, and run a free public programme of exhibitions and events. www.weareprimary.org  

About the role
The Lead Technician will help build an innovative Material Store in Primary’s outdoor space (located at 33 Seely Road, Nottingham, NG7 1NU). This is a project designed and co-built with Architectural Designers / Artists residents at Primary to build the store out of mostly salvaged and recycled materials to create a resource to reuse and recycle materials from local arts spaces and businesses.   

Its main functions are to house and reprocess materials used by Primary staff for exhibitions and events, equipment storage and provide a small workshop space.  The remaining space in the structure will be used by resident artists for shared material storage and workshop space. The outbuilding will also facilitate public workshops and events to teach and encourage materials reuse/recycling for the arts.  

This is a perfect role for someone who is passionate about the reuse of materials, has arts/ theatre technical, carpentry or building experience and would like to take the lead on the building and creation of the store.  

Role and Responsibilities  
Building:   

  • Lead on the assembling of the Material Store 

  • Reading blueprints and sketches to understand specifications and requirements 

  • Cutting, shaping, assembling, and sanding doors, frames, roofing 

  • Communicating with other artists/ builders who will support the assembling of this project.  

  • Able to work independently, following safety guidelines 

Person Specification: 

  • Based locally in Nottingham or the East Midlands  

  • At least three years of experience as an ether arts technician, residential or commercial carpenter or builder 

  • Ability to understand blueprints and diagrams 

  • Knowledge of construction health and safety 

  • Proficiency in using manual and electrical tools and equipment 

  • Has appropriate Public and Products Liability (PPL) cover
