Hugh Nicholson

Studio B8

Hugh Nicholson is an artist and writer based between Nottingham and London. His practice examines the relationship between financialization, ecology and subjectivity as a means to address the capitalisation of nature and the naturalisation of capital. Previous works have explored subjects including: steel production, cuckoo mimicry, animal casting agencies, and community plays. Using contracts, commissioning and outsourcing as artistic strategies, artworks aim to reflect and critique capital’s globally distributed impacts, affects and desires.

Recent projects include: a new commission for Chaleur Humaine, Dunkerque Art & Industry Triennial 2023, France; contribution to TESTCARD, Primary, Nottingham; and a three-month Magnetic Residency at the FRAC Grand Large, supported by Fluxus Art Projects, the French Institute and the British Council. He has written for publications including Art Monthly, The Contemporary Journal and Hospital Rooms, and received funding from bodies including Arts Council England, Artist Newsletter and the Straits Committee.

Hugh is also a member of artist working-group Common Study who have organised projects and events across spaces including: Somerset House Studios, Pump House Gallery, Deptford X Festival, Mayday Rooms and University College London.

Previously, he studied at Ruskin School of Art (BFA 2007-10) and Goldsmiths College of Art (MFA 2014-17). Between 2019-20, he participated in CAMPUS, a yearlong independent study programme organised by Nottingham Contemporary. He is currently an AHRC-funded researcher at Slade School of Art, UCL where he is developing new work exploring the relation between ecological solutions and artistic form.
