When: Sunday 29 June, 1-4pm
Where: Primary Garden
Booking: Free drop-in event
Food: Bring your own picnic! Plus free tasters of global foods and (non-alcoholic) drinks available
Join artist Priya Mistry (whatsthebigmistry) and guests for an afternoon of food, music and celebration - to mark the end of Mother Tongue: The Kitchen Residency, a collaboration between whatsthebigmistry, Primary and members of our community.
This gathering will create space to share knowledge and culture through food, language, music and hands-on activities. Join the communal table with your own picnic, enjoy free tasters of global cuisine from guest chefs from Open Arms Organisation, move to music, and get hands-on with free clay workshops (for both big and small people!). Plus see a showcase of gorgeous hand-built ceramics created by Heya during their workshops with whatsthebigmistry at Primary over the past two months.
Mother Tongue: The Kitchen Residency took place at Primary from May-June 2025, with Priya Mistry using the Primary kitchen as a base to work with local cooks, artists and communities to explore and evoke Black & Brown joy - focusing on acts of decolonisation, celebration, communing and much more. The residency is part of a multi-city programme of activity and events. Central to the programme is Mistry’s first solo exhibition ‘The Empire’s Old Clothes’ at Attenborough Arts Centre (Leicester) from 24 April – 29 June 2025. This programme of work is at once a provocation and an invitation to re-think and re-write ‘histories’, to demand change and define what it really means to take action against racism. Find out more about the project here.
All welcome, children must be accompanied by an adult.
Access: This event will take place outdoors, all areas have level access. See our Visit Us page for more information. Please contact rebecca@weareprimary.org with any questions or access needs.
Thanks to Marwa Soliman and the women from Heya for their valued contributions to the project.
This project is supported by Arts Council England, Unlimited and Disability Arts Online and shared in partnership with Attenborough Arts Centre, Primary, Backlit Gallery and Chisenhale Dance Space.
