Seed Sankalpa | Intention ritual with Saintly Amok

  • Primary 33 Seely Road Nottingham, NG7 1NU United Kingdom (map)

LOCATION: Primary garden

Join artist Saintly Amok for a seed planting workshop in the Primary garden, to sow heritage grains of wheat, barley and oats. Taking inspiration from ceremonies carried out by rural farming communities to honour the land and bless seeds and tools for the coming season of cultivation. This will be a small gathering, please book your place in advance. Open to all, welcoming those with an interest and involvement in seeds and local growing spaces.

This event will begin with Saintly Amok leading us in building and lighting a ceremonial fire havan as we introduce ourselves to the seeds to be sown by examining their stories and transforming and repairing the tools we need for this work. After performing a sankalpa (intention) ceremony, we will sow grain seeds in newly prepared planters. Over tea and refreshments, we will discuss ways in which we can support and nurture the new growth that will take place. We will end by blessing the undergoing building works and the planters with the ashes from our havan.

Artist bio

Saintly Amok creates participatory performances that resurrect ancient nature-based rituals and reactivate them in a present-day context. Participants are invited to bring their own experiences and knowledge to be shared in a supportive group setting which facilitates meaningful connections with the natural environment and our personal relationship with it. The artist draws inspiration from their own Gujarati heritage, which is rich in symbolism and reinterprets cosmological worldviews to offer alternative perspectives for contemporary culture.

This event is wheelchair accessible. Please wear clothing appropriate for the weather outdoors, we will be situated outside for most of the session, with tea and refreshments being taken under cover of the polytunnel.
