Inside the Studio Visits

Inside the Studio Visits documents a fragment of the exchange that occurs between an artist and a curator. The series offers an insight into this less than public process and highlights Primary’s role as an artist-led space in Nottingham, providing studios and development for creatives.

The series of short films is a record for curators and creatives wanting to expand their knowledge of artists based in Nottingham and more broadly their understanding of practice in the East Midlands. The project shines a light on our resident / member cohort, the creatives who activate the building day-to-day but often go unseen by visiting publics. Beyond the immediate benefits for participants, the series is also a resource for early-career artists wanting to develop an awareness of what goes on during a ‘studio visit’.

Inside the Studio Visits is a long-term project delivered as part of Primary’s Artist Development Programme. Each series will see Primary welcome different curators to the building. Invited curators choose which residents / members to visit based on shared approaches or research interests, with the potential to develop ongoing dialogues and enduring relationships with these artists.

Series One: Spring 2022

Primary invited Maggie Matić, Studio Voltaire (Curator: Studios and Residencies), Melanie Pocock, Ikon Gallery (Curator), Rosa Tyhurst, Spike Island (Assistant Curator: Exhibitions and Public Programmes), and Hannah Wallis (Curator) to carry our studio visits in April 2022. Each curator met with two residents / members, with only one exchange being documented, acknowledging that not every artist wants to make public this often very private exchange.
