Active Ingredient have developed a reputation since 1996 for creating award winning interactive artworks merging art, technology and science. Active Ingredient create innovative artworks that bring together location, social networking, bio and environmental sensing, data collection and play. Their work has included installations, large scale projections, mobile phone games and performance. Their work is often interactive and generated in collaboration with the audience, other artists, scientists and technologists.
Their work includes A Conversation Between Trees, an international co-production between the UK and Brazil connecting forests in both countries through a series of artists residencies, exhibitions and public interventions that visualise environmental and climate data. Other recent projects include Exploding Places, an urban mobile phone game looking at communities, place and history. Both projects have been developed in collaboration with the Horizon Research Institute at the University of Nottingham.
Active Ingredient was the first international company to win the Nokia Mindtrek Ubimedia Award in 2007 for the internationally renowned project, Heartlands (‘Ere Be Dragons) a mobile phone game controlled by heart rate and GPS.
Rachel Jacobs is an artist, curator, lecturer and co-founder of the award winning artist-led collective Active Ingredient, the space is shared between Rachel and the members of the collective. Rachel is also a Doctorate Candidate at the Horizon Doctorate Training Centre, when she is not at Primary she is based at the Mixed Reality Lab. Her PhD entitled the ‘Artist’s Footprint’ involves research into environmentally engaged artists who work with environmental data, exploring the opportunities and challenges this practice brings to the design of systems to engage the public with environmental and climate change.
