Chris Lewis-Jones explores notions of time, space and place. His practice is informed by an active engagement with the discourses of psychogeography, folkloric ritual 1, cultural identity and walking.

Describing himself as a ‘flaneur’, Lewis-Jones travels hopefully across media and across contexts. One of these contexts is Nottingham Contemporary, where, as an Associate Artist, he discusses and makes art with a diverse range of people. It is apparent that this work enhances his work in the studio/at Primary. His practice includes: live art/performance, painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, assemblage, installation, film, projection, gardening, music/composition, sound, photography, mapping, writing and costumed intervention. Since moving to Primary, he has undertaken folkloric performances and has been exploring ‘an active engagement with the idea of landscape’. With regard to the latter, he has a close working relationship with Simon Withers, with whom he established Nu-Urban Gardeners. NUG is a live art project that explores our relationship/s with the land through the medium of surreal gardening installations. NUG commissions have been exhibited, performed and facilitated at Tate Britain, Tattershall Castle, Hampstead Heath, The City of London Festival, The National Theatre and Nottingham Contemporary. Withers and Lewis-Jones have collaborated on many other artistic projects (including Cyril Seaton’s Cycle Roots, who performed at the Launch event at Primary on 29/3/12) and their studio has become the NUG HQ. More than a studio, it is a venue in which performative collaboration and philosophical discourse flourish.

(1)He is a well known wassailer and used to be a Morris Man!
