NU-Urban Gardeners

Chris Lewis-Jones is an artist who ‘travels hopefully’ across media and contexts. His practice is informed by an active engagement with the discourse/s of psychogeoagraphy and with all things folkloric. Although the physicality of mark making remains a central concern, his work also combines drawing, painting, sound, film/projection, installation, intervention, spoken word, facilitation, consultation, acting, walking, music and live art/performance.

In addition to his work at Primary, Chris is Module Coordinator on the Art & Design Programme at Nottingham Trent’s International School, Co-Artistic Director of Nu-Urban Gardeners (a live art company he established with former Primary artist Simon Withers), an Associate Artist at Nottingham Contemporary and Musical Director of Mortimer’s Morris.

Chris Lewis-Jones’s surreal works, which transform subjects as varied as a cricketer, the Red Cross Knight, toys and tea trays into a wry palimpsest of English ‘traditions’, particularly as presented for tourist consumption, have a sympathetic ancestor in Burra’s apparently serene southern landscapes, which upon closer inspection reveal themselves to be full of sinister implications, insinuations and booby traps…
