Writing Objects is a series of three writing sessions led by Wayne Burrows, and taking their cues from artist Jonathan Baldock’s newly commissioned installation and performance at Primary. Participants will explore the different ways that text has been used to animate, perform and inhabit objects in written and visual works by artists such as Alfred Jarry, Leonora Carrington and Jan Svankmajer, producing new responses to the various stages of Baldock’s installation as it takes shape in the Primary building.
May 7: Starting with the idea of the actor as object in Alfred Jarry’s Ubu plays we will explore the ways in which the inanimate and the human can blur – and what it means for the voice of a text when they do.
May 21: Writings by Jan Svankmajer and Eva Svankmajerova will act as starting points for an exploration of the spoken text as a fabricated ritual or incantation intent on bringing objects to life.
June 4: Leonora Carrington’s short story ‘The Debutante’ will lead us into an exploration of masks and the movements of characters between human, animal and object states, challenging us to find voices that embody these unstable identities.
Free. Booking is required for these sessions, as spaces are limited.
