PRIMARY is Nottingham’s newest visual arts venue, housed in a Grade II listed former Victorian school building. Since opening officially in March 2012, the PRIMARY Board and staff have been welcoming our new resident artists, partners, stakeholders and public into the building.
There has been lots happening at PRIMARY. We were the venue when the region’s 2012 Culture Olympiad programme was unveiled on 27 February 2012 (when we were not even fully open yet) to our first Open Studio event ‘Access All Areas’ in October 2012 which offered a weekend of exhibitions, music and film to tours of the building led by resident artists, a selection of former teachers’ memories of the school collected by playwright and theatre-maker Michael Pinchbeck, plus there was a chance to see installations by 2012 Castle Open Exhibition prize-winner Frank Abbott and globetrotting digital arts collective Active Ingredient, whose members will be sharing new work made on a recent trip to Brazil’s rainforests to study the effects of climate change.
Now home to 28 artists and artists’ groups whose work covers anything from painting and sculpture to sound, digital and performance work. We are about to embark on the second phase of our development. Creating PRIMARY house, a new live-in residency space, further refurbishment of the building to enhance our offer and a visual arts and engagement programme launching in 2014.
